76 years (and 1 day, sorry about that) ago today, the first drive-in theater opened.

The first movie I can remember seeing (Star Wars) was at the drive-in. Probably not the best way to see a movie, but it certainly was a lot cheaper. I used to take my wife to the 5 screen drive-in here, before they turned it into a shopping center. Good times.
I believe the first movie I was present for in a drive-in was Taxi Driver. According to my parents I slept through it. It was probably for the best.
I have never ridden in a trunk to get into a drive-in for free, but I have used my trunk so others could do so. I have also watched a movie from a hillside with a radio tuned into the theater’s station to watch the movie for free. In retrospect, I should have coughed up the $5 but it’s a fun memory.
Most of the drive ins eventually adapted a ‘charge by the carload’ policy. We also used to tune into the drive in’s radio station when driving past. I think my brother still has one of those speakers from the old drive in back home (forgot to take it out of the window when exiting. OOPS!)
